Where never lark, nor even eagle flew is an exciting new music composition for Youth Choir and Youth Orchestra by the acclaimed composer Brian Irvine, who worked with five young people from Sligo. Together they have written a fifty minute piece in seven movements. The piece is inspired by the mystery and wonder of space and our place within it. The performance will also have a special visual dimension created through lighting and imagery by Loch Bo films. This promises to be a unique performance.

The work was commissioned by Sligo County Council’s Arts Service and managed by Music Generation Sligo in partnership with Sligo Academy of Music.

The premiere will take place on Sunday 10th November at the Hawk’s Well Theatre as part of the Sligo International Choral Festival. This extraordinary performance will combine an extended Sligo Academy of Music Orchestra with the newly formed Music Generation Sligo Youth Choir made up of singers from a number of youth choirs from all over Sligo.

The title for the piece is taken from a poem that is recited by astronauts before the launch of a new mission.
“Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings…
Where never lark nor even eagle flew —
And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.”
High Flight – 1941, John Gillespie Magee, Jr.

The Composer-in-Residence Programme was commissioned by Sligo County Council funded by the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government Per Cent for Art Scheme and Music Generation Sligo.
