Since November 2011, the MGS Discovering Music tutors have taught the rudiments of music to over 5,500 children and young adults across Sligo.   The aim of the Discovering Music programme is to provide an introduction to the rudiments of music. In providing this programme, it is the intention that this offers the choice of access for every child and young adult, to the range of Music Generation Sligo programmes and other music activity in the county.  The Discovering Music programme offers a structured introduction course to core principles of music practice, across four tiers:

Tier 1 – Pre-school/Early Years;

Tier 2 – Children aged four to twelve years of age;

Tier 3 – Children and young adults aged twelve to eighteen years of age;

Tier 4 – Introduces whole class instrumental tuition at Primary & Post-Primary age.

Discovering Music Tiers 1-3 offer a series of either four or six age-appropriate sessions introducing the rudiments of music including rhythm, melody, responding to music, introduction to note reading and writing, introduction to playing a range of instruments, listening to music and composing music.

Discovering & Performing Music Tier 4:  Music Generation Sligo, working with partners Sligo Education Centre, Mayo Sligo Leitrim ETB (previously Sligo VEC) & Sligo Arts Service, is delivering a 20-week subsidised programme from September 2013 until April 2014 to Primary and Post-Primary Schools.   It is designed for senior classes at Primary School level (2nd-6th) and non-exam years, in particular Transition Year, at Post Primary School level. A school may apply for the programme for one or more class groupings, provided that they can meet the necessary financial commitment to the programme.

Music Generation Sligo provides instruments and equipment for the duration of the programme

Music Generation Sligo will also provide lists of resources to compliment the programme and for follow-up activity.
